About Ginger Soul

Where does a session take place? Do you have a studio?

Although I do have a small studio space, it’s much more personal to create your portraits in a place that has meaning to you. Your home, favorite spot or just a beautiful location are the places we can relax and play the best.

How long does the session take?

Your session will last about 1/5 to 2 hours.  I want to have enough time to settle in and relax without worrying about a time limit.  If we’re having fun, why stop?

HELP!!! I’m not photogenic! (aka – I hate how I look in pictures.) Shouldn’t I wait til I’ve lost 10 lbs/have had a total makeover/grow taller, etc?

Believe it or not, pretty much EVERYONE tells me this before their session, and it never turns out to be true! I love coaching my clients through having their photos taken, and I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to make you look fabulous! When you’re having a great time, you’ll look more beautiful than you thought was possible. I promise!

What should we wear?

I’ve put together a complete session preparation guide for my clients that I send before every session. It included information about clothes, hair/makeup and other useful tips to help you look your very best in your portraits.

What if my children don’t cooperate?

I love getting to know my clients’ kids, even the ones who are shy/stubborn/you name it. I always approach the session as a new friend who’s just there to play and have a good time. I have plenty of patience (we have plenty of time) and I find that being easy going translate to happy kiddos. And let’s be honest, not every moment of the session is perfect – just as in life – and that’s more than OK. It’s actually encouraged. Life is messy and fabulous all at the same time. We’ll capture the whole story, from elation to tears and back to elation in 30 second intervals. These are the beautiful quirks, details and fleeting moments that make up childhood and they all deserve to be captured.

I saw these cute pictures on Pinterest. Can we do those?

I love Pinterest as much as the next girl! But Pinterest is best used as an initial source of inspiration, rather than a strict guideline for your photographer. If we’re focused on recreating someone else’s photos, that will leave us less time to create shots that showcase the unique aspects of your family.

If you do want to use Pinterest to help you plan your session, look at it as general inspiration — for instance, use it to figure out what style of photos you like, and then search for a photographer whose images match that style.

Can we incorporate some of our cool hobbies into the shoot, such as motorcycling/ waterskiing/surfing/horse-riding/archery/chess?

That is my specialty!! Our motto is “Let go. Let’s Play!” for a reason. Our hobbies and passions are integral to who we are as individuals. They are an important part of our stories and should absolutely be part of your portraits. Whatever you’re into, whatever your passion, I want to make that part of your session.

What can I do to help the session go smoothly?

The BEST thing you can do is to let go and enjoy! I know it’s hard not to be stressed before your session, but babies and children pick up on anxiety really easily. We’ll have the best chance at getting gorgeous images if we let them happen naturally (with a little guidance from me, of course!) I want your pictures to be amazing and will do all the hard work for you! Your only job is to relax and have fun.

Can I keep the images from my session private?

All clients sign an optional model release before the session. If you would prefer to keep your images private, you may indicate your request at that time. For clients who choose to decline the model release, I absolutely respect your decision and will keep your images under lock and key.

Can we do a home session even if our house is tiny/dark/messy?

YES!!! I’ve worked in many clients’ homes, and I’ve never found one that didn’t work. There is always a beautiful little patch of light that’s perfect for photography! If it’s home to your family, that’s all I need to work with! And PLEASE don’t worry about the mess — nothing fazes me. If needed, I’ll help you move furniture/clutter around as we go.

What am I likely to spend on the portraits?

The experience is designed to be very flexible so that you only choose exactly what you love.
Albums start at $550, wall art from $175, prints from $35.

Can we buy digital only photographs?

We will always include a complimentary web image of each printed photograph that is purchased so you can share with family and friends, however, we don’t offer a digital only package for our professional portraiture.

Are the files edited/retouched?

Every image is color-corrected and given a little clean up before your viewing session. Any images that you order will be fully retouched at no additional charge. Common fixes included but are not limited to: flyaway hairs, skin smoothing and blemish removal, escaping bra straps, etc.. Let me know if you have any special requests after reviewing your images.

Do you provide black & white copies?

Every image is originally photographed in color, but I also provide custom black & white conversions of any image in your order.

We would like to create a photo wall. Can you help?

Yes! 100%! We suggest you take a photo of the wall that you have in mind and take down the measurements. We can help put designs together for you in the studio using software that will show you exactly what your photographs will look like on your own wall. We’re also available to do an in-home consultation for you by request.

Can I buy a gift voucher for my friend?

Yes! I can help you over the phone, or I can send you a link where you can purchase the gift voucher online at anytime. You can choose any amount of studio credit or select a specific product to be included in their gift. We will make sure they absolutely LOVE their experience!

Can we use two different gift vouchers at the same shoot?

We can accept one gift voucher per family per year. If you’ve been extra lucky and have received two gift vouchers, we are happy to extend the second vouchers expiry to the following year. You are also welcome to give the voucher as a gift to someone else whom you believe would love the experience.

OK, we're ready to book! What next?

I can’t wait to work with you! Please send me a message here, and we’ll come up with a game plan for your session. After that, you’ll be able to book your session and submit your deposit online. 50% is due upon booking to reserve your date, and the remainder is due on the day of your session.

I also ask new clients to fill out a short questionnaire, which helps me get to know you and your hopes/goals for the session.

About our Women’s Weekend

What is it all about?

It’s about so many things. As women we wear so many hats everyday. The responsibilities and pressure to do, do, do and go, go, go leave little time to be still, relax and connect. Over time, our inner little girl gets buried and we forget how to play and what makes us unique. These weekends are about getting together, relaxing and having fun as a temporary tribe of the feminine rock stars that we are.

Why would I want a picture of myself?

The portraits that we create during this weekend are all about reconnecting with that little girl inside and coaxing her out for a bit. It’s about celebrating who you are right now, today. It’s not about looking a certain way for someone else. And the images have a way of transporting you back to the fun and positive experiences of the weekend. They may even change the way you see yourself. And let’s be honest…you’ve earned it!

I love the idea, but I’m shy/an introvert. Can I do a private session?

You bet! This is also an option if you just want it to be all about you and don’t want to share. J There’s nothing wrong with either one. We’re here to help you tell your story however you want to tell it.

I have a tribe of friends/family that want to join, but we can’t make it on any of the dates listed. Can we make our own event?

Yes, yes and oh yea…yes! We can put together a custom event for you. We can go a location of your choosing and plan activities just for your group. How cool is that?

I can’t go for the whole weekend. Can I come for 1 day?

We understand that sometimes you can’t take a whole weekend away from your responsibilities. Don’t let cause you to miss out entirely. If you can only come for a day, that’s better than not at all.

Do I have to get ‘nekkid’?

Nope. Not at all. Although I jokingly say that I will strip you down and wrap you in fabric, I will only do that if you’re comfortable with it. The goal is to step outside your normal everyday wardrobe to have some fun and tell your story. That could mean using long, flowing fabric. It could mean a leather corset & broadsword. It could mean a rag skirt & scarf. This is not boudoir photography: it’s empowerment photography. We want you to love the skin you’re in whether you show it or not!

What do I wear?

Feel free to bring your favorite outfit. Don’t have anything special you want to wear? No problem. We have all kinds of fun things to play dress up in.

It says you have special activities over the weekend. What are they?

You never know what we’ll be up to on a girl’s weekend. Could be a craft involving glitter (my favorite!!), a yoga class, energy work, hula hooping, pedicures, a dance class… We just want to play!

Do I have to participate in these activities?

Absolutely not. Everything is optional. If you’re not down with something we don’t want you to feel obligated or guilted into participating. Hey, sometimes the thought of getting up at sunrise to do yoga is exhausting all by itself. Maybe glitter is a trigger to a past trauma involving Elmer’s glue. It’s all good.

Is Professional Photography Worth It?

Is professional custom photography worth the investment?

Yes! I’m proud to provide an experience that my clients have told me is worth every penny and more! A lot of time and care goes into creating the images and experience that you’re investing in long before and long after the actual session.  To see where the time outside the session is spent and why custom photography costs more, check out this link: http://www.professionalchildphotographer.com/information/what-is-custom-photography/why-does-custom-photography-cost-more/

But what does all that time add up to?

One amazing (and fun!) experience.
When you are unrushed during a 2-hour session, amazing things happen.  You start relaxing.  You can only give so many posed, stiff smiles, so after a time you naturally loosen up and start to become more of who you are every day.  The images become about you and your family being yourselves.  Snuggling.  Laughing.  Inside jokes.  Playing.  Flirting.  Spontaneous loving moments can’t be forced, but over the length of a custom session, they will unfold unaided. Bringing in a professional photographer allows you to capture and keep them forever.

A custom photographer is around to help you before and after this sweet experience.  They will help you prepare, offer experienced advice on what to wear, find a location that suits you well, answer last-minute questions and give reassurance.  After the session, the images are securely backed up.  The finest images are selected, then individually handcrafted to bring them to their full potential, making them shine.  Additionally, I’m available to personally walk through my clients’ homes with them to photograph their wall spaces and design stunning wall art.  After the session, they receive a custom catalogue of ideas that will use their images to adorn their space.  My clients get personalized recommendations that suit their space perfectly.  They don’t have to rely on their own guesswork, or simply feel so stressed out so that they grab an 8×10 and run.

Clients of a custom photographer don’t just receive a very special session.  From beginning to end, they receive extra services that help them prepare for the best session possible and then help them use their final images in beautiful and striking ways.  This is the benefit to hiring a photographer who will spend many hours working with you individually.

What is the difference between a professional and an amateur with a really nice camera?

A professional photographer has spent exhaustive amounts of time and money developing expertise that directly benefits YOU. They can go in, under, around, and through any situation to make an image.  They don’t bat an eye at cantankerous kids, because they know exactly how to help the kids enjoy themselves.  They aren’t wildly spraying shots everywhere in the hopes that a few will turn out, they wait for the right moments and act deliberately.  They know how to set people at ease, especially those who don’t like having their picture taken.  They see your best qualities and bring them out.  It’s their job to think about how you look, so that all you have to do is think about how much you love the people you’re with.

A final thought...

Custom photography is an investment, to be sure.  One that most families must plan for.  But as anyone who has had a memorable custom photo shoot can tell you, the resulting images will be cherished for generations.

I hope this has helped you understand a bit more about what custom photographers can do for you.
